I fell in love with this B&B—the castle itself and its quiet location in the heart of Val d’Orcia. Staying at Il Mastio di Spedaletto, a bed and breakfast inside a restored medieval castle, was one of the highlights of our trip to Tuscany.

Our suite was so comfortable that it honestly spoiled us for the rest of the trip. Nowhere else we stayed in Italy came close. While our room didn’t have panoramic views, you’re surrounded by the beauty of the Tuscan countryside the moment you step outside. Walking the grounds, you’ll see rolling hills, cypress trees, and golden fields in every direction.

It was peaceful and scenic, and it also made a great base from which to explore nearby towns like Pienza, Montepulciano, and Montalcino. This is our full hotel review of Il Mastio di Spedaletto Relais, based on our three-night stay in the Suite Piccolomini.

This review is based on our stay at Il Mastio di Spedaletto Relais in the fall of 2022. While the experience reflects our visit, this post has been updated to keep the information current and helpful for planning your own trip.

Highlights of Our Stay at Il Mastio di Spedaletto

  • Booking Experience
We booked our stay at Il Mastio di Spedaletto Relais through Booking.com, and everything went smoothly. After booking, we emailed the host, and she responded quickly with helpful suggestions and confirmed our reservation. She also assisted us with restaurant bookings before our arrival, which we appreciated.
  • Room
We booked the Suite Piccolomini, the largest room available at Il Mastio di Spedaletto Relais. The suite was spacious, beautiful, and updated with all the modern comforts—without losing the traditional charm of the historic building.

It felt more like a small apartment, with a separate living area that included a kitchen table, small kitchenette, and an additional bathroom with a full shower. The main bedroom had a comfortable bed with high-quality sheets that made it hard to get up in the morning. A clawfoot tub sat nearby, adding an extra touch of luxury. The main bathroom had a large walk-in shower and modern fixtures.

The windows overlooked the castle’s courtyard, offering a quiet view of the open space below. If you’re a couple or even a small family, you’d be comfortable staying here.
  • The Details
This suite had all the thoughtful extras that elevated the stay. It had a stocked minibar, a kettle for coffee or tea, and a well-organized space for wine glasses and barware—something we made good use of after winery visits.

Housekeeping came by daily, keeping everything spotless and refreshed. The bathroom was sleek and fully updated, with beige-toned stone tile, a large vanity, and a glass walk-in shower with a rainfall showerhead. Soft bathrobes, fluffy towels, and toiletries were ready for use.

There’s no traditional front desk, but everything was handled smoothly through pre-arrival email. Our hosts had everything ready for us before we got there—and it showed.
  • Location
Il Mastio di Spedaletto Relais is set in the Tuscan countryside, just outside Pienza. It’s a peaceful, rural location surrounded by the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia, with postcard views in every direction

Driving from here to nearby towns like Pienza, Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico d’Orcia, Montepulciano, and Montalcino was easy. The property has a parking area, and having a car makes it convenient to explore the region at our own pace.
  • Dining Options
Breakfast was included with our stay and served in the shared kitchen every morning. The hosts greeted us each day with a warm smile and a spread of freshly baked local pastries, eggs made to order, seasonal vegetables, fruit, and yogurt. It was simple, filling, and felt homemade in the best way.

There’s no on-site restaurant for lunch or dinner, but the location made it easy to drive to nearby towns for meals. The hosts also provided great restaurant recommendations and even helped make reservations for us.
  • Customer Service
The property is run by a kind Italian woman and her daughter, who were both warm and welcoming. While English was limited, communication was never an issue—we managed just fine through email, hand gestures, and plenty of smiles.

Il Mastio di Spedaletto Relais is a small, family-run property, and you can feel that care in how the place is managed and in the hospitality they provide.

Before our arrival, the host was responsive and helpful via email, answering questions and assisting with reservations. During our stay, they were present at breakfast each morning and made sure we had everything we needed.
  • Hotel Amenities: The property has a beautiful courtyard and a garden area out back, where you’ll find more seating and the jacuzzi tucked away in a quiet corner. It’s a peaceful spot to relax with a glass of wine or enjoy the fresh air after a day of exploring.

Wi-Fi was included and worked well throughout our stay. While there’s no pool, spa, or gym, but the setting encourages you to slow down and enjoy the surrounding views.
